"All I really need to know, I learned in kindergarten."
Does this DIY craft look difficult? It's not! Can you cut paper? Color? Glue things together? Tie a knot? If you answered yes to these things, then you not only passed kindergarten but you can make a Halloween banner too!
Don't think you'll have time to make one by Halloween? Pick up a kit and be ready for next year!
The Build a Banner Kit can also be used to make a Thanksgiving banner, or pick up the Simply Created Christmas Banner Kit and be ready to deck the halls this Christmas!
**This awesome kit is available in the holiday catalog only through January 2014. Don't delay!
Fun Family/Friend ideas...
Create a banner with your kids! Each child can make a pennant for a unique family designed banner!
Plan a meetup with some friends. Order enough kits for everyone and then meet for a crafting date! Don't forget your computer or tablets so my videos are on hand to assist you every step of the way! Weeeeeee!
There are many freebie downloads on the web, but if you'd like to bring your crafts up to the next level then read on for instructions, shopping lists, and even a 3 part video tutorial.
Instructions:
1. Purchase banner kits and/or suggested items from the shopping lists below.
2. Plan out your design first! You can make the banner as featured in the Simply Halloween Banner Kit's instructions, make one just like mine, or Stamp Your Way with your own design.
3. Gather all supplies and tools needed:
- Build a Banner Simply Created Kit
- Halloween Banner Simply Created Accessory Kit
- Scissors
- Adhesive of your choice (recommendations below)
- Sticky strip (strong, permanent) adhesive
- Low temp glue gun and low temp glue sticks
- Silicone mat
- Ink: Stampin' Up Stampin Pads, or Stampin' Ink refills
- Ink application tool: Sponge daubers or Spritzer bottles (comes with Halloween banner kit)
5. Prepare and protect your work surface! Make sure pennants are face up (check grommets to know which side is the front), then use stencils to add pattern designs to your canvas pennants. Part 1 and Part 2 videos show how I inked (colored) my canvas using Ink pad and sponge daubers. If you'd prefer to try the Spritzer method then check out Stampin' Up's video of the Christmas version of this banner kit... Here!
6. Add rosettes and and/or glittered die cuts (skull, bat, spider with web) to your canvas pennants using hot glue.
7. String each pennant together using jute twine (comes with kit).
- String one long piece of twine through all the pennants. Use the "down the left grommet, up the right grommet" method. (See video)
- Space pennants out as desired.
- Tie double, overhand knots with provided ribbon around jute on top of each grommet to secure pennant positions.
- Form loops in the jute for hanging at the beginning and end of the banner. (Can't see this very well in my video, so here is a better illustration. I just made a "single" surgeon's knot. This video makes a double surgeon's knot...Click Here!)
Rosette Details:
The following examples are how I designed my pennants. If you'd like to make a banner like mine then read on, otherwise skip this section and Stamp Your Way.
- Apply ink to canvas pennant using zig zag (chevron) stencil. I "colored" mine using Stampin' Ink Pad in Basic Gray and a sponge dauber.
- To make cardstock pennants: cut a piece of Pumpkin Pie cardstock that measures 3" x 6 1/2". Find center of the bottom (3" side) of the cardstock strip and make a straight cut 1" up from the bottom. Use scissors to make cuts from bottom corners up to the top of the 1" center cut, to form upside down V cut out. Use Essentials piercing pack, piercing tool, and the piercing mat to poke detail holes around the cardstock pennant.
- Use letter stencil to "color" the appropriate letter to the Pumpkin Pie cardstock pennant. I used Basic Gray color, Stampin' Ink pad.
- Rosette assembly: For this pennant, I used one of the pre-scored rosette strips that come in the Halloween banner kit. Follow directions for rosette assembly per instruction sheet or watch my video, Part 2. Punch a 2 3/8 scalloped circle using paper from the Witches Brew cardstock pack. Adhere pre-printed circle cutout from the Halloween banner kit (skull design) to the scalloped circle. Use glue dot(s) to attach summer starfruit button to skull design. Color sequins using permanent marker and attach to skull face for eyes. Attach scalloped circle design to the rosette.
- Use low temp hot glue to attach Pumpkin Pie pennant to the canvas pennant. Use hot glue to attach rosette on top of cardstock and canvas pennants.
- Apply ink to canvas pennant using striped stencil. Turn stencil on the diagonal. I "colored" mine using Stampin' Ink Pad in Summer Starfruit and a sponge dauber.
- Use letter stencil to "color" appropriate letter to canvas.
Adhere pre-printed circle cutout from the Halloween banner kit (floral design) to the scalloped circle. Use glue dot(s) to attach black faceted button to center design. Attach scalloped circle design to the rosette.
- Use low temp hot glue to attach rosette to pennant.
- Apply ink to canvas pennant using striped stencil. I "colored" mine using Stampin' Ink Pad in Pumpkin Pie and a sponge dauber.
- Use letter stencil to "color" appropriate letter to canvas. I used Basic Gray color, Stampin' Ink pad.
- Rosette assembly: I made my own rosettes to match the size and shape of the rosettes that come in the Halloween banner kit. I cut two strips of cardstock from the Witches Brew designer series paper pack that each measure 8" x 2". I scored both strips at every 1/4 inch along the longest side of the strips. Following the rosette directions, I first attached the two 8" strips together to form one long 16" strip, then finished the rosette assembly as before. Punch a 2 3/8 scalloped circle using paper from the Witches Brew cardstock pack. Using the spider web paper from the Witches Brew designers series paper pack, I punched out web designs with the Label Bracket punch. I made sure the tiny spider was centered in the punch out. I used an orange permanent marker to define the spiders legs. Using the same orange marker I colored two sequins, measuring 3mm and 4mm. I attached the sequins over the printed spider body, to create a 3D sparkly spider.
- Adhere the spider web punch out to the scalloped circle. Attach scalloped circle to the rosette.
- Use low temp hot glue to attach rosette to pennant.
